K. Brooke Pengel, MD, is a board-certified pediatric sports medicine specialist with 15 years of experience devoted to treating youth sports injuries. In July 2010, Dr. Pengel proudly joined the Rocky Mountain Youth Sports Medicine Institute, an affiliate of Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, as medical director of the youth sports medicine program. Dr. Pengel brings nationally-recognized skills and talents to the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, where she is dedicated to providing expert care for young athletes. Dr. Pengel received her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She served as pediatric chief resident at the University of Connecticut prior to returning to the University of Colorado to complete her fellowship in sports medicine. Dr. Pengel's experience in academic medicine locally at the University of Colorado fostered her passion for teaching, which continues to this day. Dr. Pengel regularly presents lectures to local physicians, coaches and parents on issues related to the prevention and treatment of youth sports injuries. Dr. Pengel is also active in sports-related community service, serving as a team physician for numerous high school and college teams throughout the Denver metropolitan area. She has been featured in numerous media interviews, locally and nationally, regarding sports medicine topics. In addition, Dr. Pengel has authored several book chapters on sports medicine. As a result of her dedication to the field of sports medicine, Dr. Pengel was recognized by her peers in 2009 as a "Top Doctor" in the field of sports medicine (as published in 5280 magazine). Dr. Pengel is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Pengel is privileged to serve on the Executive Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics' Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness (AAP COSMF), and recently supported the development of an official policy statement on tackling in youth football. While no longer involved in competitive sports, Dr. Pengel continues to enjoy many recreational sports such as running, biking and skiing. She also enjoys an active Colorado lifestyle with her husband and three children and remains an avid sports fan.
