Dr. Heffron is an internationally recognized leader in liver surgery, having performed more than 1,000 liver transplants including more than 140 living donors over the past 25 years. He has expertise in complex hepatobiliary surgery as well as transplants, and his experience is with both adult and pediatric patients. He was a member of the first team to do living donor liver transplants at the University of Chicago and has successfully transplanted both the youngest child and smallest child in the world. A graduate of the University of Nebraska School of Medicine, he did a surgical residency at Creighton University and a multi-organ transplant and hepatobiliary fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Heffron’s experience as a primary surgeon on liver transplant exceeds national averages, and he has the largest case series of ABO incompatible transplants in the United States. In addition to superior clinical expertise, Dr. Heffron is known for his open and supportive communication with patients when making a decision regarding surgery and his immediate accessibility for referring physicians.
